Free Spirited Christian Living

For freedom, Christ has set us free. What does it mean to be free in Christ? We value our freedom here in the United States of America. One lesson we have learned about freedom is even the freedoms we enjoy as inalienable rights have limits. There are laws that teach us what it means to live free. Laws are put in place to ensure that freedom can continue.

One of the challenges our society faces is the myth of autonomy and the false sense of individualism. We are autonomous, we are individuals, and we face the consequences of our actions as free individuals. There are certain limits put in place by God that ensure freedom. For example, what goes up must come down in the physical world. You are free to fly but not without an airplane. For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction. Catch a tiger by the tail and see how the tiger reacts. You are free, but that freedom has limits that ensure freedom.

When we refer to freedom in Christ, we don't mean simply going to heaven when you die. Freedom in Christ means coming from death to life. You once were blind, but now you see. You once were lame but now can walk. You once were dead but now are alive!

This is what it means to be free in Christ - to come from death to life, from old creation to new creation, to experience all things new.

You once chased after images of “the better life.” But now you have been to the Cross. Now you have been called. Now you have been sealed by the Spirit. You are now free in Christ. This is living.
